Beyond the Bedside: How Lincoln University College’s RESET Programme Is Reshaping Mental Health Awareness for Future Nurses

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia — 25 September 2026. Lincoln University College’s School of Health & Applied Science, through NADI Club’s Career Development Unit, hosted Beyond the Bedside — RESET: Your Mind and Soul, a dedicated mental health and well-being awareness programme for Bachelor in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing students. Held at Level 3, Medical Hall, MASS Campus, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the programme forms part of Lincoln University College’s ongoing commitment to holistic nursing education in Malaysia — one that prepares future nurses not only clinically, but emotionally and socially.

Nursing Education That Goes Beyond the Classroom
Nursing students face some of the most demanding academic and clinical journeys in higher education. Recognising this, NADI Club’s Career Development Unit designed RESET as a reflective pause — a chance for Bachelor and Diploma Nursing students to refresh, reflect and realign their mind, goals and purpose before returning to the pressures of clinical training.

Guided by two speakers, Mr. Amirul Zulkilman and Dr. Azizul Amar, the session moved through topics often left out of a standard nursing curriculum: social issues, attitude, personal challenges, study goals and self-awareness. The programme also addressed HIV education and awareness, LGBTQ community awareness, and child sexual abuse and exploitation awareness — equipping future nurses with the understanding and sensitivity they will need to care for diverse patients throughout their careers.

Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

As with other School of Health & Applied Science initiatives, RESET was built around measurable alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing Lincoln University College’s position as an institution that embeds sustainability, inclusivity and social responsibility into everyday student life.

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: The programme’s core focus on mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, alongside HIV awareness and sexual health education, directly supports better health outcomes for students and, in time, their future patients.
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Structured, speaker-led sessions gave nursing students accurate, practical knowledge they will carry into their professional practice.
  • SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities: The LGBTQ awareness component promoted inclusivity and worked to reduce stigma toward marginalised communities.
  • SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: The child protection and safeguarding session raised awareness of abuse prevention and reporting mechanisms — core to building strong, accountable institutions.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: The event brought together students, educators and external speakers in a shared commitment to awareness and social responsibility.

Building Resilient, Compassionate Future Nurses

The objectives behind RESET reflect a broader philosophy at Lincoln University College: that a confident, compassionate nurse is built on more than clinical skill alone. The programme aimed to help students identify common stressors in academic and clinical life, develop self-reflection skills, strengthen resilience, and realign their personal motivation toward becoming responsible, patient-centred healthcare professionals.

This people-first approach to nursing education in Malaysia is part of what distinguishes Lincoln University College’s Bachelor in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing programmes — degrees that combine rigorous clinical training with genuine investment in student mental health and professional identity.
